How to save your seasonal fruit

Some fruit is only around for a short time in the year, so it’s only right that we take care of it and stop it from going to waste – especially when it comes to food storage.

Seasonal fruit usually requires a special degree of care so that it stays fresh and tasting best, and doesn’t end up in the bin. Particularly in the sweltering summer sun, fruits can go bad more quickly.

See our list of some of summer’s seasonal fruits, and how to save them from turning into trash.

1. Cherries
Maroon red marvels of juicy sweetness. Cherries are a delicious berry that everyone enjoys. To take care of them, refrigerate them instantly if you’re not going to eat them the same day. Make sure to check that there aren’t already soft or mouldy cherries, as these can make the others go off faster.

2. Plums
Another fruit known for its soft flesh and sweet nectar. Plums should be washed properly and care should be taken to make sure that they are not squashed in the fridge. Keep them spaced out and keep them away from rotting fruit.

3. Strawberries
Ruby red bulbs of tart pleasantness. Strawberries are a perfect berry for anything. Take care of them by keeping them dry. Store them by wrapping them in a paper towel, which will absorb moisture, or use your Grundig FullFresh+ technology fridge, which keeps your fruit and vegetables fresh without wasteful packaging. To stop cross-contamination, which leads to strawberries going off faster, make sure that you take out any soft or mouldy ones from the pack as soon as you can.

4. Watermelon
Everyone enjoys a watermelon smile! This large fruit might be difficult to store, so if you are going to cut it to put it in the fridge, cover the exposed side with cling film. This will stop it from losing moisture and will stop it from absorbing other smells from your fridge. An uncut watermelon can be stored in a cool, dark spot for 4 days.
